A big crowd turned out at the Academy in Llandarcy and were treated to an absolute cracker of a game played by two of the top teams in the West Wales Youth League.

This was the 7th final in the league’s short history and it was Pontardawe Town’s 3rd final having won the Cup back in 2013 and more recently in 2017.

Pontardawe Town started the game well and took the lead on 13 minutes through Oliver Schofield (1-0) but almost immediately Sandfields equalised through Ryan Cole with an excellent strike from outside the box (1-1)

The game was pretty even although Pontardawe Town were looking the more dangerous but it was Sandfields who scored next as Aiden Jenkins scored with another fine strike from long distance (1-2). Sandfields then nearly extended their lead but hit the crossbar.

After half time Pontardawe Town looked more composed and likely to score but again Sandfields were up to the task and Charlie Davies, who worked tirelessly up front all game, broke forward and slotted calmly home passed Dylan Evans in the Pontardawe Town goal (1-3)

It then became one way traffic as Pontardawe forced corner after corner but missed chance after chance. Heroic defending by Jack Harding and Ethan Evans especially kept Pontardawe out but finally Callim Dolman pulled one back after a scramble (2-3). Then, on 83 minutes, substitute Adam Griffiths broke through on the right and calmly slotted home to level the scores (3-3).

The game then went into extra time and it would be fair to say that most would have expected Pontardawe to push on and win the game. They didn’t though account for Charlie Davies, who sometimes looked out on his feet, but on 96 minutes he fired home a brilliantly taken free kick (3-4) and then in the second half of extra time he broke through to score Sandfields’s 5th and his hat trick (3-5)

As referee David Morgan brought this fantastic game to an end it was Sandfields who won their first trophy at this level with the man of the match award being presented to Charlie Davies.
