S&R Trophies Semi Final Match Update

By Gary Thomas

Two competitive semi finals end with Pontardawe Town facing Sandfields United in the final

The semi finals of the West Wales Youth League's cup competition, the S&R Trophies Cup, took place on Sunday 3rd February at the 3G surface at Penyrheol Leisure Centre

Dafen Welfare 2-7 Pontardawe Town

First up were Dafen Welfare, the current cup holders, against twice former winners Pontardawe Town

It was a very good game on a fast surface with both sides giving 100%. Dafen took an early lead through Kyle Bessent on 8 mins against the run of play but the scores were level on 17 mins when Kaiden Wheeler scored past Dafen keeper Ryan Britton.

Dafen restored their advantage on 26 minutes with an excellent strike from the edge of the box by Jordan Williams but just 3 minutes later Pontardawe struck back through Andzejs Dubjaga. It was the same player who then gave Pontardawe a 3-2 first half lead when he fired home on 28 minutes

The second half belong to Pontardawe Town despite a great effort by Dafen who never gave up for the whole 90 minutes but couldn't match the pace of Pontardawe. On 57 mins Dylan Bebb hit a 4th for Pontardawe and a 5th followed 3 minutes later through Ben Webb after an excellent run.

On 82 minutes Kaiden Wheeler got Pontardawe's 6th and on the stroke of full time substitute Adam Griffiths hit a 7th goal. This scoreline flattered Pontardawe Town and full credit must go to Dafen Welfare who fought to the end in what was a very well contested game throughout

Ystradgynlais 0-4 Sandfields United

This was another well contested game, possibly a little too competitive in the early exchanges as both sides gave everything and in doing so kept referee Clive Halliday on his toes.

The first half saw Sandfields United have the edge but resolute defending by Ystradgynlais kept them at bay and the teams went into half time at 0-0

The pace of the game seemed to benefit Sandfields who turned the screw in the second half and it was they who go through to the Final with 4 unanswered goals. Ryan Cole scored two whilst Aiden Jenkins and Lewis Gibbs added one each

Well done to all teams for getting to the semi finals.

The date and venue of the final will be confirmed in the coming weeks.
